Professor Michael Stacey
Michael Stacey is a vascular surgeon and Winthrop Professor of Vascular Surgery within the School of Surgery at The University of Western Australia (UWA). He is based at Fremantle Hospital where he oversees a multidisciplinary team providing clinical care, as well as teaching research.
Professor Stacey has served a term as Head of School and remains heavily involved in the teaching of undergraduate medical students on surgical rotations. He has supervised postgraduate research students and continues to be involved in the education of Surgical Trainees.
Professor Stacey has a long-standing research interest in wound healing and venous ulceration. His research group conducts research ranging from laboratory evaluations of the mechanisms for delayed healing in chronic wounds through to the clinical evaluation of new therapies.
He has been actively involved in national and international wound-healing societies, and was the founding president of the Australian Wound Management Association and the inaugural chair of the World Union of Wound Healing Societies. He is also a member of the International Wound Bed Preparation Advisory Board.
Along with Occupational Therapist Jillian Swaine and Health Economist Delia Hendrie, Professor Stacey has embarked on an NRP-funded randomized controlled trial of an individualised self-management program to prevent pressure ulcers following spinal cord injury (SCI). This study will design a new evidence-based individualised Pressure Ulcer Prevention Self-management Program for individuals with SCI by integrating biofeedback from ultrasound, interface pressure mapping and transcutaneous oxygen monitoring. The aim is to increase self-efficacy, pressure ulcer knowledge, satisfaction and participation. Resource utilization and cost effectiveness of the new program will also be determined.
