Assistant Professor Lindy Fitzgerald
Dr Melinda (Lindy) Fitzgerald is currently Research Assistant Professor, at Experimental and Regenerative Neurosciences, School of Animal Biology, The University of Western Australia, in Perth, Australia.
Her research focus at Experimental and Regenerative Neurosciences is the mechanisms of secondary degeneration following injury to the central nervous system and exploration of treatment opportunities. The group uses partial transection of the optic nerve as a model, in which events of secondary degeneration can be precisely and spatially defined.
Dr Fitzgerald is currently exploring the early events of secondary degeneration and is also using a CNS specific calcium channel blocker to modulate injury responses. These treatments are being tested in combination with other therapeutic strategies, including nanotechnology in collaboration with scientists at the Centre for Strategic Nanofabrication at the University of Western Australia. Dr Fitzgerald is currently supported by the NRP and the NHMRC to study mechanisms underlying secondary degeneration in the central nervous system.
